ORGANIC COCOA IN EUROPE
1. Consumption of cocoa buyers cocoa beans in the consuming countries are wholesalers, processors and chocolate manufacturers vertically integrated. A small number of multinational companies dominate the processing of cocoa beans and pasta, among which the most important are located in Holland and Germany. Both countries also have a number of major wholesalers, but many are located in the United Kingdom, Switzerland and France. The European Union has a dominant global position in the grinding of cocoa beans. Nearly 40% of world grain supplies cocoa are destined to the European Union, amounting to a volume of 1.33 million tons of cocoa in the year 2005/06. Grinding cocoa importing countries are larger than in counties of cocoa bean exports and increase in a higher rate. During the review period, EU mills increased by 3.4% per year, demonstrating the positive development of demand for cocoa. The grinding cocoa-importing countries is larger than those in the cocoa-exporting countries. Organic Cacao 1.1: According to industry sources, organic products still represent a small fraction of the total market, but this participation steadily increasing. These sources indicate that the total industrial demand for organic cocoa beans and fair trade round between 25,000 to 30,000 tonnes annually, mostly in the EU and the United States. The EU is by far most of this demand, since part of the demand for organic cocoa in the United States is provided through the European importers. The largest markets in the EU are Germany, Holland and France, but Switzerland is also very important. 2. Total Imports: 2.1 Cocoa: How can be analyzed, imports increased significantly for three cocoa products. Imports, by volume, have increased at a much slower pace, indicating an overall increase in import prices of cocoa in the EU between 2001 and 2005. Imports of cocoa beans increased by 2.9% annually in volume, 4.3% for cocoa paste, and 5.7% for cocoa powder between 2001 and 2005. This is an interesting development in terms of value and volume, a larger increase in imports of processed cocoa for cocoa beans raw. Organic Cacao 2.2: As the markets for organic products in developing countries is still limited, the majority of organic cocoa production is exported to Western countries. Imports of organic cocoa in Europe were estimated at 14,000 tonnes of cocoa beans in 2003, of which an estimated 2,000 tons were exported back to the United States. European importers are responsible for most of the processing and marketing of cocoa beans. Germany and the Netherlands are the main importers of organic cocoa, of which most are re-exported to Holland. Other major importers are France and Italy (imported part from Germany).
